What is a Doctor of Optometry?

Doctors of Optometry (Optometrists or OD's) are the primary health care professionals for the eyes and visual system. Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.

Doctors of Optometry prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, topical and oral medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy; and perform other procedures, such as removing metal foreign bodies from the anesthetized eye. When appropriate, optometrists counsel their patients regarding surgical and non-surgical options that meet their visual needs related to their occupations, avocations and lifestyle.

An optometrist has completed pre-professional undergraduate education at an accredited college or university followed by four years of professional education at a college of optometry, leading to the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree. the OD's are licensed by the state in which they practice, and ongoing professional education ensures knowledge of new ways to help their patients.
